  • BATBOX

Every July we find tell-tail bat droppings on our kitchen window ledge. These announce the arrival of a small colony of female bats that take up residence behind the soffit boards on our gable end. They usually stay for a few weeks then move on. Apparently, this is a nursery roost and the bats stay from the birth of their babies until they are weaned. As it gets dusk we watch them flying and hunting over the garden and around the house. During the day we can hear them rustling and occasionally squeaking to each other.

One evening, a bat found its way into our bedroom and flew backwards and forwards in a figure of eight and we were able to watch it for a considerable time, even taking some video of it in flight. Eventually, after we'd opened all the windows wide, it flew out. This increased our interest in the bats so we looked for a bat detector to enable us to 'listen' to the bats' ultrasonic echo-location noises, and perhaps identify them.

We identified the Batbox III as being the most suitable and were delighted with it, and now offer it and a range of other products for bat enthusiasts. The Batbox III D is the digital replacement for the original Batbox III and is the most popular detector for the majority of amateur 'bat detectives'. The Batbox Duet is a more sophistocated device with two different methods of frequency shifting. It is more suitable for the real enthusiast or field researcher.

Whether you buy a bat detector or not, we recommend you get the Bat Detective book and CD as an ideal introduction to British Bats and how to identify them.

Amazing, fascinating and bizarre are the words that barely start to describe the bats of the world. Some are big, some tiny, many eat insects and fruit, yet there are others with more unusual tastes in food - such as the fisherman bat which uses its claws to catch fish or the unjustly demonized blood-eating vampire bats. Bats will not fly into your hair, and they are not blind, though most find their food and avoid obstacles in the darkness of night not by vision, but by using their remarkable and highly developed sense of echolocation.

Their role in pollination is crucial to the environment in which they live. Bats are full of suprises. With such a large array of species, bat expert Phil Richardson takes you on a guided tour of the nocturnal world of bats: where they live, how they feed, and how they survive in almost every habitat on the planet.

He uses his experiences of bat watching around the world to bring these misunderstood creatures to life, describing their complex life cycles, explaining how readers can watch and study bats and help conserve these often threatened mammals. Wherever you live, there are likely to be bats near you, so discover more with the help of this book.
