  • IVORY DIAL

This dial is hand made and hand painted.

It has not exactly been established when a magnetic compass was first added to a sundial.
The first portable compass-sundial was already known in 1480 in Nuremberg, which was the first city in Europe to have an organized trade of compass makers.
According to the craft rules, compass dials were to be made in ivory or good quality boxwood.
The sundial you have acquired is a perfect replica of the one signed by Hans Troschel dated in 1626 and it is totally handmade in ivory resin.

This particular one, also called Pillar dial with double style (or gnomon), is a luxurious version, made for people of social importance, which differs mainly because of its decoration. Similar examples were made with noble materials such as ivory, exotic wood, brass or marble (richly polychromed).
