TeleVue Ethos Eyepieces

TeleVue lead the way once again with the superb Ethos range of eyepieces. Each has an enormous 100-degree apparent field of view enabling you to operate at a higher magnification and still see as large a patch of sky.

Apart from giving you the feeling of 'being there' the higher magnification improves contrast in star fields so your favourite objects stand out whilst still fitting in the field.

TeleVue introduced the 13mm Ethos first and it caused a great deal of excitement and interest. They followed it with the 8mm which was equally well received. The 6mm and 17mm then joined the family, followed by the 10mm. Now the 3.7mm 'simulator experience' completes a very impressive lineup.

These eyepieces are designed to give that 'space-walk' feel when used with a quality telescope.

The image on the right shows the same true field of the Double Cluster as seen through a 13mm Ethos (left) and a 26mm Plossl (right). The Ethos has double the power so the background is significantly darker and contrast is greatly improved. In fact, the background light is spread over four times the area it would be in a 26mm Plossl which improves contrast by a factor of four.

When the improved contrast is combines with the extra magnification it provides what Al Nagler calls a 'majesty factor of 8' - an attempt to quantify the awesome experience these eyepieces offer compared to a standard eyepiece.

Al Nagler eagerly pushed Ethos designer Paul Dellechiaie to extend the new 3.7mm focal length to reach 110°, the same field size as the LEM Simulator optics Al designed 45-years ago to train NASA astronauts for lunar landings.

The new 4.7mm Ethos-SX, like its 3.7mm progenitor, is designed and crafted to combine its exceedingly wide field of view with all the contrast, color-rendition, distortion correction and center-to-edge sharpness needed to achieve that natural view.

Compared to a lower power eyepiece with the equivalent TFOV (similar field stop) such as an 11mm Plössl (9.1mm field stop), the greater power - for higher resolution, and smaller exit pupil (for a darker background to enhance contrast) reveals a deep sky experience "even better than you imagined".

Following on from the phenomenal success of the 13mm Ethos, TeleVue have now introduced the 8mm Ethos. With the same 100-degree apparent field it opens up a completely new exerience for owners of quality telescopes. It is smaller and lighter than the 13mm and will fit in the binoviewer.

Al Nagler compares using the 8mm Ethos with an 8-24mm pointing out that it has the same magnification as the zoom when set to 8mm but with a much, much bigger field of view, and, 83% of the zoom's field when set to 24mm.

This eyepiece is a must if you want to get the most enjoyment from your telescope.

Ethos 13mm Eyepiece Ref: TV-ETH-13.0

Televue's Ethos 13mm has an incredible apparent field of view of 100 degrees allowing you to frame large objects at high magnification to give what Televue call an exceptional "Majesty Factor". Read the reviews on the Televue site then return here to order this superb eyepiece.

Majesty Factor Visualization: in the image below the eyepiece the 13-mm Ethos (left) and 26-mm Plössl (right) have the same true field of the Double Cluster. But Ethos has twice the power factor and four times the contrast factor. Ethos therefore has a Majesty Factor of eight relative to the Plössl's Majesty Factor of one. For reference, the 0.9° true field shown could be produced by a 14" f/4 telescope using the 100° Ethos at 109x with a 3.2mm exit pupil or the 26-mm 50° Plössl at 55x with a 6.5mm exit pupil.
