Takahashi Mewlon TelescopesBased on the Dall-Kirkham optical design, Takahashi's Mewlon reflectors offer all the convenience of the compact two-mirror configuration but with much better optical performance than a Schmidt-Cassegrain. Three apertures are available, 210mm, 250mm and 300mm. The accuracy of the optical surfaces is at least lambda/20, concentrating as much of the light as possible in the Airey Disc. This produces stellar images that are extremely sharp; contrast is excellent. The Mewlon primary mirror, oversized compared to the effective aperture, is installed in a mirror cell especially designed to avoid the stresses that sometimes lead to astigmatism in inferior models. The focuser, often one of the weak points of competing telescopes, is particularly neat. The translating mechanism of the primary mirror of Mewlon 180mm telescopes is machined with particular care in the Takahashi workshops in order to reduce image shift, and to make accurate focusing easy. Mewlon 250mm and 300mm telescopes are equipped with an electric secondary mirror focuser. A 2" eyepiece holder is standard. The Mewlon attaches to equatorial mounts using functional and effective dovetails. Their design facilitates frequent handling such as balancing or OTA assembly/disassembly without deterioration. Moreover, a counterweight is provided to balance the optical tube on large diameter Mewlons. Mewlons incorporate a high quality finder scope, giving bright, sharp images. The finder scope can also be used as a handle for transportation, without creating any bending or malfunctioning. |
