William H Smyth lived from 1788 to 1865 and served in the Mediterranean during the Napoleonic conflicts as an officer in the Royal Navy. After retiring, he established the country's finest amateur observatory at Bedford in England. From here he observed a huge variety of deep-sky objects during the 1830s and compiled The Bedford Catalogue, volume 2 of A Cycle of Celestial Objects. For this work the Royal Astronomical Society awarded him its gold medal and elected him president.
The Bedford Catalogue is one of those true astronomical classics whose value has not disappeared with time, particularly the descriptive material. He describes what the user of a small telescope will see, but also includes much astronomical, mythological and historic lore.
Robert Burnham in his famous Burnham's Celestial Handbook and Walter Scott Houston in his monthly Sky and Telescope column Deep Sky Wonders make frequent reference to it.
