 | Stirling Engine Kit Ref: LH-StirlingKit A cardboard kit for a fully functional Stirling engine! The Stirling engine runs on a HOT cup or an ICE pack. The revolutionary concept of this engine was invented in 1816 by Scottish minister Robert Stirling. The principle is ingenious and simple: In a sealed cylinder (main cylinder) heated or cooled at one end, a piston (displacement piston) moves the enclosed air back and forth between the cylinder's hot and cold ends. In this way, the air is alternatively heated and cooled, creating a cycle of compression and expansion, of high and low air pressure. A piston (working piston), connected to the main cylinder, is kept in motion by the alternating air pressure, and in turn moves a crankshaft and flywheel. A small portion of the produced energy is used to move the displacement piston and keep the engine running by itself. If you set this fully functional Stirling engine on a cup of hot coffee and give the flywheel a small thrust to the left, the whole apparatus begins quietly to run - up to one hour long! That is however not all: - Set it on a cold source i.e. a cooling pack from the freezer or a thick block of ice, give a thrust to the flywheel to the right this time, and the whole apparatus begins quietly to run. Set Includes Clear English assemble instructions with diagrams, Historical Background and principles of Operation 3 Sheets of Cut-Outs 1 Plastic Bag consisting of Aluminium Plates (laser cut), Assorted metal fittings (friction-less plastic axle bearings and wire bent from spring steel) and a Latex glove.
