The Solar Corona - shining in the clear skies above Carroix in Picardie |
David Gray kindly sent us these photos together with notes on how they were taken. Click on the thumbnails for a bigger image.
First Picture:
" The corona, 300 mm lens, probably 1/4th at f/4.5, Ektachrome 100 slide
film. Soon before third contact.
The quality of the slide is fine, but the digitisation is admittedly
terrible. Better results when available."

Prominences - digitised using an 'off-the-wall' technique |
Second Picture:
" Here is my photo of the prominences just after second contact, taken on
Ektachrome 100 slide film at 1/1000, f/8. The camera is a Nikkormat EL
with a 300mm Nikkor lens, max. aperture f/4.5.
The slide was carefully [!] digitised by projecting it onto a wall, and
photographing it with a digital camera, seen in the photos in a pouch on
my belt. The result is quite faithful to the slide."
If you're not sure what David looks like then this might help:
" I am the tall fellow in
Mike Smith's photos - on page 3 I am watching
the packing away, and I feature more face-on on page 1."
